Quit Coal

Drupal Version:
Why does this website deserve to win?: is more than just a website. It is a community platform that will eventually comprise 250 websites across the USA, all built and deployed using Drupal technologies. The platforms supports Greenpeace USA's major Quit Coal campaign, which will unfold over the next five years and eventually lead to the closure of some of the most highly polluting power plants in America.

This platform allows Greenpeace staff and organizers to easily deploy new community websites in each new community they start to campaign in, which provides a focal point for communications and outreach, reasources for local activists who want to join with Greenpeace in their camapaign.

Each new community website feeds content and social nerworking data to the hub site at At the hub, people from across the country share their stories about dirty coal plants in their communities and build solidarity based on these common experiences.

Eventually the network will span the USA and local communities will benefit from cleaner air and cleaner energy, thanks to the efforts of Greenpeace USA and the technology made possible by the Drupal Community. deserves to win because it epotomizes what is possible with Drupal, with Open Source, and with community energy and commitment. Drupal makes the web a better place so communities can use the web to make the world a better place. It also desrves to win because it is working. For example:

The Fisk and Crawford coal plants have loomed over the City of Chicago for a hundred years, fueling climate change and exposing families to dangerous levels of soot, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. After a groundbreaking ten-year grassroots campaign to shut down these archaic plants, Chicagoans have reclaimed their right to clean air.

Website Launch Date:
Monday, August 1, 2011
How It Was Done (optional): was built using Drupal 6. The hub site and community sites communicate using custom scripts. New community sites are deployed by non-technical staff at Greenpeace using Aegir at unique URLs and in some cases at specialized geographic locations.
