Grammy.com

Drupal Version:
This website looks great on mobile devices!
Why does this website deserve to win?:
The 54th GRAMMY Awards featured a new design for GRAMMY.com. The new site carries over all the functionality from the previous iteration, while adding all the responsive web design goodness users have come to expect from high-profile sites. The media-heavy nature of GRAMMY.com means that the site required a custom responsive design, including resizing photos, video players, rotators, and carousels. Besides simply responding to the size of the screen, all video content also has to be HTML5 compatible of course, to help mobile devices that don't support Flash, such as iOS devices or the new Chrome for Android browser. It also is a feed source for the 54th GRAMMY Awards iPhone app. For the third year in a row, the site has handled tremendous amounts of traffic while keeping the site running smoothly. (Last year we were pushing over 2,500 megabits a second through the content delivery network.) With nearly 40 million television viewers this year, and a significant segment of those viewers accessing content online, reliability of the site was essential. Just to give an idea of the amount of viewers and online exposure, according to Bluefin Labs, 13 million social media comments were made during the broadcast. How It Was Done (optional):

The development of the site resulted in the new contributed module Facebook OAuth, which The Recording Academy funded: http://drupal.org/project/fboauth

The site was also the original reason for the development of http://drupal.org/project/ooyala.

We're using Apache and Varnish for serving pages, Memcache for caching, and Apache Solr for search. The nominees page is entirely managed through Flag module (Flag a Nominee as a Winner). We don't have any idea who the winners are beforehand (we're watching the live feed just like everyone at home) and we individually flag each winner as they are announced.
